As my next customer entered the bar, the screeching bell sang its tune. It reminded everyone as to why the establishment should get rid of it, but no one wanted to. As the noise faded, everyone continued drinking at their tables, the servers continued handing people their greasy pizza, and I cleaned out the glass for the man walking towards me.

“What’ll it be?” I asked as the man sat on one of the stools. It had a tear in its seat, and he scooted forward, probably ripping it even more.

“I’ll just have a whiskey on the rocks,” the man told me. At first, I couldn’t get a good look of the person who I was serving. He wore a long hat, a thick coat, and black gloves over his hands. Even though it was still raining hard from the sound of it outside, his outfit was still a bit overkill. Plus, it didn’t help that all the lights were dim, making it hard to see. I began pouring his drink, making sure that it was as chill as a relaxed penguin on a block of ice. I handed it to him, and he began sipping it.

“Thank you,” the man said. As he did, he took off his hat. I began cleaning my glasses, despite the fact that business had been slow. When I turned around, I saw that the man had removed his hat. Now I could see his face clearer, and a gasp escaped my mouth. Was that…?

I walked closer to him, trying not to look like a creep. His thick, black hair still covered his head, and when he glanced at me, his eyes were still deep pools of lime-green. Some light-stubble speckled his face, but I could see behind it. The strong jaw, the small nose, it had to be him. Or at least a doppelganger.

I approached him, ready to strike. I had so many questions, but I would start with small talk.

“Horrible weather, right? I’m glad you could make it in Barry’s. Sit for a spell, and a drink, and everything will be fine,” I told him, babbling my usual shilling for the tavern I tended.

“I think I may just do that, even though I like the rain. How have you been, miss?” he asked.

Either he doesn’t recognize me, he’s just playing, or it’s not him, I thought.

“It’s going. Work has been slow, but hey, what do you expect on a Monday afternoon? They put me in the worst shift possible,” I said. “Normally, I work weekend nights, where I rack in the big bucks with tips.”

“I’ll make sure to tip you well,” the man replied. “How much do you want… Alice?”

As the words escaped his lips, that sealed my theory. It was him! My mind flash backed to high school as I almost backed away.

“Zack, it is you,” I said.

“In the flesh,” he replied.

I wanted to explode, to scream at him for all that he had done these past eight years, but I kept my cool.
